Giving Back Positively

Green Shoe has been providing incredible information on self-care during this pandemic. I wanted to explore giving back as an area of self-care. There have been several studies which suggested generosity and giving back positively impacted an individual's health both mentally and physically. The studies showed possible effects of lowered blood pressure, increased overall happiness and an increased sense of purpose.

Giving back might be a way that we honor others. We may find a cause to be a part of that has helped us in some way in our life. It can connect us to times in our life that we have needed help and compassion from others. During my childhood, I always saw my parents helping others. It is a part of our humanity and our interdependency to help those around us.

When we are giving back, we must assess if we are doing it in a healthy way. This assessment involves setting healthy boundaries. As a reminder, in the Green Shoe model, boundaries are ways to set limits, to contain and to protect. They keep us safe as well those around us, so we do not hurt or offend. I know I can get lost in helping others so much I neglect myself, or I may help someone to a point they become too dependent.

Growing up, my father would often remind me of The Greatest Commandments. The second of these commandments being “Love your neighbor as you love yourself”. We often forget the last part of that commandment – “As you love yourself”. Since the start of the pandemic our community has experienced new and difficult realities. Whether it be related to health, race, relationships, or economic struggles, we have all been impacted. We are all in this together as a community, united in finding ways to help. I think we are all inspired by stories of giving back in trying times. I would love for you to share how you are giving back, how are you loving your neighbor as you are loving yourself.
